Karyn kicked off her sneakers coming through the door and ran upstairs, tossing her backpack on the floor by her computer. She plopped down on the bed and thought about her situation. Apparently everyone thought she was a lesbian, and that she and Thea were dating. Karyn wasn't attracted to women, but she was intrigued nonetheless. She had never had a boyfriend before, and admittedly the thought of having someone who cared for her that way, even if they were the wrong gender, was appealing.
She figured she could tell Jon tomorrow. Worst-case scenario, she doesn't like it, they get this thing fixed, and she would get to see what her life would be like for one day.
Karyn picked up her phone, found the number in the student directory, and gave Thea a call.
Thea picked up, sounding concerned. "Karyn? Are you ok? Is everything ok?"
"Hey Thea," Karyn said, remembering what happened earlier. "I'm ok. Sorry about earlier. I've just been going through some things at home."
"Anne told me she talked to you. Is everything ok? Is it your parents? You told me you weren't going to come out to them until graduation?"
Karyn made a mental note not to bring up the issue with her folks, then. While she was curious to know how they'd react, she didn't want to go through that drama if she could avoid it. "No, nothing like that. My uh, my grandmother's sick."
Thea paused for a moment. "Well, ok. You'll tell me what's really going on when you're ready, I guess. I'll be here for you."
Karyn decided to move on, agreeing that it was a weak excuse and that if they had been dating, Thea would have known if something was going on. "Listen," she said, "About earlier... I still want to hang out with you tonight. What did you have planned?"
Thea's voice perked up with giddy excitement. "Awesome! Tonight we're doing shitty movie night over at Roger's place! He's got a copy of Birdemic that we're gonna watch and Thom is getting off early tonight so he's bringing pizza."
Karyn laughed at that. Jon had been trying to convince her to see the movie, which he said was the new "The Room." She felt a little bad for not seeing with him, but figured he could get over it. "Ha, that sounds great! I'm in."
"Awesome, I'll swing by in a half hour and pick you up," the excitement in her voice still obvious. "Wear something slutty," she added mischievously.
"What?" Karyn said, a bit shocked.
"Hahaha, you are so adorable! I swear, I can literally hear you blushing over the phone." Thea said, laughing. Karyn laughed as well, feeling a mixture of awkward relief and genuine amusement. "Well, later babe. See you in a half hour!"
"Bye," Karyn said as she hung up the phone. She looked over at her wardrobe. Thea had been joking about wearing something slutty, but Karyn contemplated changing clothes anyway. She hadn't been on a date since freshman year and while she wasn't going to go overboard (and didn't own anything that would really classify as slutty), she also kind of liked the idea of wearing something nice to impress someone, even if it was only for the wish-created alternate reality lesbian girlfriend everyone though she had who would only last until she and Jon wished things back to normal tomorrow.
"What to wear," she wondered aloud as she thumbed through the clothes hanging in her closet.
