Halfway down the hall, Jon stopped when he heard Zoe's bedroom door opening. He wondered what she'd think about their mom being Goth like her. But that thought suddenly disappeared when he saw her.
"Zoe? Are ... are you okay?" Jon asked.
His sister emerged from the bedroom, not looking gothic in the slightest. In fact, she didn't really look like anything. She looked plain, ordinary. There was nothing that really made her stand out. It was almost like everything that made her gothic had been sucked out of her and this was what was left over.
This must have had something to do with their mom's transformation.
"Yes, Jon. I'm fine," she said, in an almost monotone voice. It was like she didn't have a personality or something.
You are definitely not fine, he thought, still looking at her.
