"These Mages are so pretentious, who can even read that?" Sir Kristan complained, pointing at the markings above the exit as he passed under it.
"But Sire that was the common language, it said 'Exit'".
Sir Kristan looked shocked momentarily. "Very funny boy, you just guessed what it said"
Sir Kristan's confidence made Wally doubt himself, he was sure it was in the common language, they both should've been able to read it, maybe he had misread it or maybe it was a Mage's trick.
The room before them shook Wally out of his thoughts, it was a classroom for children. Row upon row of desks filled with children and an elderly teacher sat at the front. Sir Kristan sheathed his sword and started making his way to the front of the classroom. Wally looked around feeling eyes upon him as they reached the front.
"What are you two doing here?!" barked the teacher as they approached his desk. "Take your seats, the test is about to begin"
Sir Kristan and Wally looked at themselves in disbelief, they were now child-sized and their clothing was too.
The teacher loomed over them and they felt compelled to take two empty desks next to each other.
"Alright class, you may begin the test" the teacher sat back down.
Wally looked at the paper laid out before him. It was a multiple choice test. It seemed simple enough, he remembered taking a test like this when he was younger. He got to work, breezing through the questions.
Sir Kristan looked at his paper, it seemed to be a multiple choice test, but the writing was in that strange font he saw earlier. He glanced over at Wally's paper, it was written in the same font but Wally was having no trouble with the paper at all. Starting to sweat, he raised his small pudgy hand. The teacher glanced up at him.
"Yes, Kristan?"
"Sir, I can't read my paper" Kristan asked with his squeaky child's voice.
Children's laughter rang out around him. Kristan could feel his face going red.
"Just do the best you can then" The teacher looking bored went back to reading their book.
Wally was almost done, when he felt a pair of eyes on him. He looked up and saw Sir Kristan peering over at his paper.
"Hey!" He said instinctively, hiding his paper with his body.
What an idiot, he has to cheat on such an easy test
"Look at your own paper Kristan" The teacher now suddenly behind them ordered, slapping Sir Kristan with his cane.
Sir Kristan rubbed his arm where he got slapped and attempted to complete the rest of the test.
When the two young boys finished. They took their papers to the front. After peering at Wally's for a few moments.
"Excellent work Wally, top of the class, you've got a bright future ahead of you"
Wally's body grew and in moments he was back to his original self. Wally enjoyed being taller than the tiny Kristan.
"Kristan, very disappointing, you must do better. Even after cheating you only just managed to get over half right. See me later, young man".
Sir Kristan grew in size, but didn't return to his original height. He was now slightly smaller than Wally. He would estimate that he was now only 18-19 years of age. His physique was slimmer but he lacked the little the muscle he had.
When he'd finished changing. The classroom and it's occupants disappeared leaving the two adventurers in an empty room where another exit materialised.
"B..boy.. " Sir Kristan spluttered his voice didn't have the same gruffness or loudness as it used to. "..I can't read anymore and I'm a pipsqueak again"
"Yes, but I think you're the boy now" Wally laughed making his way to the exit. "Let's go and get this finished"
Sir Kristan smiled as he grew hope that this nightmare would soon be finished.
