Jon usually got to choir early, and today was no exception. Despite normally not being a very strong singer (although that seemed to no longer be the case), Jon very much enjoyed the expression that choir gave him, and did more for the club than any of the other students, including recruiting his best friend.
When Karyn arrived at the community center a few minutes after Jon, however, she was chatting with someone Jon recognized, but didn't know very well. Some new girl who'd moved to the school this year and joined choir. Her name was... Sarah something. Sarah Molyneux? That sounded right. Her family moved to the town from Germany, and her English was good, but not quite fluent. Jon had never really spoken to her, in part because of that.
But now she seemed to be getting along famously with Karyn. Karyn spent too much time with Jon for him to not know the two had gotten that close. What was going on?
Sarah asked Jon why he was sitting so far away from the altos in broken speech. Jon shook his head and said he wasn't feeling too well as he cautiously moved closer to their seats. This was obviously part of the wish too, but how? Sarah turned to Karyn and translated the exchange to English for her as Jon settled himself down.
Wait. Translated to English? It took Jon a moment to realize, but he'd been speaking, and thinking, in another language. And a moment later, the name of that language seemed to come to him as naturally as anything in his life: Finnish. Then he tried to talk to Karyn directly, but found, to his horror, that certain words were just not coming to him.
What was going on?
