Jon got up the next morning, planning to walk to school and meet Karyn. He wondered what had happened with last night's wish. How far along was Karyn's pregnancy? Does that mean they were in a sexual relationship?
He noticed her bulging belly and said "Hi, Karyn!"
"Oh, Jon... something happened. All of a sudden I was pregnant..."
That wasn't right. Weren't wishes supposed to change reality, so that she would think she had already been pregnant? Then he realized his mistake. He didn't just wish her pregnant. He wished that she'd become pregnant at a particular time. If he does that, it can't change reality so that she became pregnant at some time in the past--she'd have to become pregnant at that exact moment that he wished for, not before or after.
"I think... it's my fault..." stammered Jon. I made a wish for you to become pregnant, but it wasn't supposed to be like this, you were supposed to think I made you pregnant. Nobody was supposed to notice it was sudden and magical."
There was a shocked look on Karyn's face and Jon realized he shouldn't have confessed. "You... what? It's my body! And you put your baby in it! And not only that, you wanted me to believe I had it because we had sex. How dare you! Get away from me! We've been friends for so long and now you do this!"
Jon ran away as Karyn walked in the other direction, crying again. He realized that he hadn't been thinking. Karyn was right, making her think they had sex when they hadn't was a bad idea. Could they reconcile? Maybe with a little help. "I wish that Karyn doesn't mind that I made her pregnant at all. And I wish that that happens without mind controlling her."
Suddenly Jon felt himself compelled to run towards Karyn. He yelled out her name. He found himself rehearsing over words in his mind, words that he suddenly felt sincere about saying... it felt very bizarre. He tried to go to school instead, but a moment later he realized that he was heading back towards Karyn to apologize, and he felt that he really, truly, wanted to.
And it was too obviously a result of the stone. What was going on? "I wish I knew why I'm doing this."
And the answer: In order for Karyn to not mind that she made you pregnant, without mind controlling her, you have to convince her it's okay. It's only possible to genuinely convince her by saying, doing, and believing certain things, so you have no choice but to say, do, and believe them.
Jon realized that Karyn really did like him a lot. Otherwise it wouldn't have been possible to convince her at all that it's okay to carry his child. Still, he wondered how far he'd be forced to go to convince her....
