Jon wished something interesting would happen, but that was not something an intimate object, even a magic one, could decide...what was interesting. A wish granting stone...what it focused on were wishes.
Suddenly, Jon vanished...and the digital clock on his nightstand began to roll backward....until it was that morning again.
The McMillans were one of the more affluent families in town. Richard had taken his ability at identifying and selling products and turned it into a multi-million dollar business that was a major employee in the suburb. His wife, Susan was a local, not that many people knew that. She'd reinvented herself, like many others, after graduating from high school, and had a career as a model...although as she got older, she had branched out into other things.
Sarah, their daughter...was unplanned. Not necessarily unwelcome...but at the time, not something either had discussed, as Richard's business was taking off, as was Susan's modeling career...which she resumed as soon as Sarah was old enough.
It meant that Sarah's time with her parents was limited. When she was younger, Sarah hadn't realized how much they'd left her in the hands of hired help. Now, as a teenager, she didn't have that anymore, but if she spent a night at home, it was often with only the live in maid as company.
Her parents demanded she do well in school, her mother wanted to know she was a cheerleader and popular, and had spent time teaching Sarah techniques of how to do so...techniques that had allowed her to rise to the top of the social hierarchy at the high school. Sarah didn't know that wasn't where her mother had been at that point in her life. But once she'd succeeded in making her daughter what she wished she'd been in high school, her involvement sharply declined.
It meant essentially, Sarah could do whatever she wanted. Her parents wouldn't approve of her having boys stay overnight, but she had let Biff stay several times...making sure the maid kept her mouth shut about it. Biff was safe. He wanted to take care of her....but ultimately, he knew who was the boss. And Sarah needed to be the boss. Even with how much she needed someone like Biff...she'd broken up with him several times this year...mostly when she thought he was neglecting her. But recently, she'd compromised and accepted he needed some time hanging out with his male friends. As long as she came first, of course.
When Sarah woke up on Monday, she immediately reached for her phone to check her messages. Several from Melissa...none from Biff since they texted good night... Her parents had been at some charity function last night, which probably meant her mother would be still sound asleep until long after she left for school.
All in all, it was an average day for Sarah.
