I sat in my booth in the diner, thinking to myself. I know that the wishing stone is here. I thought to myself. All I need to do is find who has it.
I looked around the diner, taking stock of all the people here. None of these people have it. They're all being far too casual. I added to my thoughts. If one is given infinite power, it's unlikely that they'll be able to act as they normally would. Luckily, over the years I got quite good at reading people and the little things they did to betray their thoughts.
I looked up as I noticed the waitress approaching, the check for my meal in her hand. A grin spread across my face. I reached into my pocket and produced the stone. It's simplistic design his it's true usefulness. It was able to twist people's perception of any event into anything I wanted it to be. While it couldn't actually change anything aside from people's thoughts, it was quite useful.
I held it under the table as the girl walked over to my table, so that she couldn't see as the green stone began to glow. Before she got close enough to hear me, I mumbled my desire to the stone.
As she walked up to the table, I could see her mind going blank for a moment as the changes took place. When she snapped back to reality, she shook her head a bit and came up to me. "Here's your change sir." she said, handing me a twenty dollar bill and a five.
"Thank you." I said, smiling. It had been a bit over a year since I had actually had to pay for anything, which was good since my search for the wishing stone had kept me from holding an actual job.
After she walked away, I returned the stone to my pocket and stood from the table and placed the five dollar bill on it. After all, she was a good waitress. I thought, grinning. She earned it.
I walked out of the diner, still smiling. "Ahh, the wonder's of magic." I said, holding the stone in my pocket. I saw my reflection in the window of the diner. My short blonde hair was combed perfectly and I was cleanly shaven. A nice free haircut. I thought. Oh, I was sure that the businesses I swindled with my magic were often perplexed when they were twenty or so dollars short for the day, but in their minds, I had payed.
I shook myself from my thoughts. I needed to find the wishing stone. After all, why steal when I can just wish up whatever I want? I thought to myself. I looked around and began walking in a random direction. "I'll find it eventually." I said.
