When Jon could see again he was not on the beach anymore. He was on the sidelines at a high-school football game. Just in front of him he could see the team in a huddle going over the next play. Steve, not the quarterback in reality, was dreaming that he was. They broke, lined up, and ran his play perfectly, gaining the team twenty yards.
Back into the huddle they went. Jon ran onto the field to join them. Not knowing anything about football he ignored what Steve was saying and spoke into his ear over the din.
"You love pink."
It was a simple statement, but suddenly the black uniforms the team was wearing all turned pink. Jon smiled.
"You don't want to be hit by the other team. You're afraid of them."
The other team shimmered, then reappeared almost twice the size they had been before. He could see inside their helmets frothing mouths, distorted faces, fangs. They did look terrifying. He didn't blame Steve for being afraid.
"You'd much rather be cheering on these boys than playing."
Steve's uniform changed into a cheerleader's uniform. He kept laying out the play that the team was going to run, but he lacked all the confidence he previously had. Obviously he'd rather be anywhere but there. His eyes kept darting to the sidelines where the cheer team danced away, performing one of their routines. He sighed.
Jon ran back to the sidelines and turned just in time to see the ball get hiked, and Steve run away from the other team screaming like a girl, skirt flying behind him.
The world went dark and Jon woke up with a smile on his face.
