It was a strange morning for Zoe. As much as she wanted to get to school early to enjoy the sunshine as she watched the rest of the student body arrive for their classes, she couldn't pry herself away from the drama that was unfolding.
When Athena first showed up at their front door wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt, Zoe first thought that it was Jon's best-friend Karyn. It certainly was an outfit that Karyn would don, and since Athena had dyed her hair, her hair was the same bleach-blonde hue that Karyn so naturally grew, the same colour that Zoe was considering for her own mop. Even Athena's naturally large breasts, while not quite as big as Karyn's, almost had Zoe convinced.
When Zoe noticed her friend's face, however, she realized who it was.
"Athena?" she had asked, "Is that you?"
A guilty look had appeared on Athena's face. She had been talking to Jon about something, and looked like she was waiting on an answer eagerly. In fact, she barely looked at Zoe, which hurt Zoe's feelings. Was she being ditched by her best friend?
Then, just when Zoe was about to address the situation, Karyn arrived.
"What the hell?" Karyn had exclaimed in shock, eyes darting between Athena's new look and Zoe's outfit. Karyn probably was jealous of her new pink top, Zoe thought. She couldn't blame her, really, since it did show off all the right bits.
"Uh, hey Karyn," Jon had muttered, "You know Athena, right?"
"Athena?" Karyn said in disbelief, "No way. Jon, what did you do?"
Athena had inched her way to Jon's side and had taken hold of his arm possessively. Zoe wondered what had come over her friend. Sure, her hair looked great, and it was cool that she, just like Zoe, was trying something new other than the goth look, but why was she so into Jon? Athena had always been Zoe's friend, always been there for her when she needed. It didn't matter that Zoe was a year younger, that Athena often shared classes with her older brother, Athena had chosen Zoe as a best friend.
Now, it seemed, something had changed. Maybe with her new look Athena wanted to try out a new friend too.
"I don't know what you mean," Jon stuttered in response to Karyn.
"The stone, Jon, you obviously did something. I mean, look at these girls!"
Jon had turned red. Zoe didn't know what Karyn was on about, but it was probably a territory fight. Athena was obviously moving in on Karyn's turf, and Karyn was pissed. Zoe, foregoing her early trip to school, sat down on the nearby stairs, waiting for the sparks to fly. Sure she was worried about losing her friend, but this kind of drama didn't come along every day.
