"Jon, let me use the stone," Karyn demanded of her friend.
"What do you need it for?" Jon asked in reply.
"I don't know. Something feels wrong. I need to fix it."
The dream Jon shrugged his shoulders and opened the door behind him, which lead into his bedroom. As Karyn stepped in behind him, though, she saw something that didn't belong. A girl, sitting on Jon's bed. The girl looked familiar, but Karyn couldn't figure out from where.
"Who are you?" Karen demanded of the girl.
"I'm Jen!" Jen replied.
"Who?" Karyn asked again.
"She's Jen," Jon supplied, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Don't you know Jen?"
Vague images of a boat and a classroom flashed in Karyn's memory. "Uh, maybe," Karyn said.
"Karyn, stop joking around and come here," Jen said. "You're supposed to be helping me choose a prom dress."
"What?" Karyn said, shocked, "I don't know anything about dresses."
"Sure you do," Jen said, "You're the school's fashion expert."
"No I'm not."
"Sure you are!" Jen insisted. "You're always wearing new styles and putting together outfits I don't even understand!"
"I wear jeans and sweaters!"
"Those don't look like jeans and sweaters to me," Jen said, pointing at Karyn.
Karyn looked down, and saw a fancy blouse in pale pink and white, the kind where one shoulder is totally exposed and the sleeve falls down by the elbow, over a the same shade of pink miniskirt and a pair of white tights, capped off with a pointy pair of pink pumps.
"What the heck am I wearing?" Karyn cried.
"I dunno, but it suits you," Jen said.
"Yeah," Jon agreed.
Jen flounced up from the bed and opened Jon's closet, "come here, you need to look through these and tell me what's what."
Karyn was shocked when she saw that, instead of being filled with Jon's stuff, the closet had nothing but brightly colored, poofy, shiny, delicately hung prom dresses. "What the heck are those doing in Jon's room?" Karyn asked.
"This isn't Jon's room," Jen said. "It's mine. You sure are confused today."
Karyn spun around, and looked more closely at the details of the room. Jon wasn't in any of the pictures. Instead they were all of this Jen person. Karyn was in most of the pictures too, but she was always wearing fancy stuff she couldn't ever remember wearing, and even more worrying, Sarah McMillan was in every single picture that Karyn was in. This realization made her feel uneasy.
Karyn turned to look for Jon, but he wasn't in the room anymore. She turned back to Jen, to find her in a bright blue sleeveless satin dress, turned back towards to room to see it was now very obviously a girl's bedroom, and--
Woke up in a cold sweat, blanket bunched up at her feet, sun not up yet, alarm clock showing 5:18. The details of her dreams were already fading, but certain details had crystalized. Karyn tried to remember as much as she could: she really needed to talk to someone about it.
