The rest of the week was rather uneventful. Drew hung around the house, played video games, read, swam, texted her mom a few times, rearranged her room...and she gave little thought to the other occupant of the house, about as much as one might to an apparent piece of machinery.
It was past midnight when Samantha, mother and owner of the house returned. She was exhausted from the flight and wanted to just get cleaned up and head to bed. Tomorrow, she'd go get her youngest daughter from her sister's house, where she was staying. It was too late tonight and she wasn't going to wake the girl up.
As she entered, she pressed the button to summon the Maidbot from the recharging chamber. It took a few moments. "Owner identified. How may I be of assistance?"
"I'm back. Please take my suitcase to my room, and turn down the bed."
The Maidbot picked up the suitcase and headed upstairs to the bedroom. Samantha was too tired to give it much of a look. She trudged up the stairs behind the bot, grabbed a nightgown, and began to change into it as the other occupant of the room turned down the bed. It didn't occur to her to care that the Maidbot was in the room, any more than the TV, or the dresser.
She reached for her phone, and sent a message to her son that she was home, but tired, and she'd see him when she woke up.
"You can resume your recharge cycle now," she told the bot, climbing into bed. "Close the door as you leave."
It moved back toward the door, and Samantha drifted into a deep sleep.
