"I wish I knew why I'm feeling so strange." The stone glowed and she got her answer. Her eyes went wide. A boy named Jon made a wish that turned him into another person. And that person was Mallory! She didn't remember the wish that he made, because she was a totally new person. Only Jon could remember the wish, but Jon didn't exist anymore!
"I wish I knew what would happen if I wished Jon back in existence..." she said.
The stone glowed and she got her answer. She saw the possibilities. If she wished Jon back into existence, as his wish was vague, she and the reality she knew would cease to exist and his wish would happen another way.
If she wished they both existed...if they were born as twins, for example...then her mother would decide not to have another child...it would put one of her siblings at risk...one of them would cease to exist.
She saw the complete truth of the matter. She couldn't wish the boy who was originally born instead of her back into existence as he was without her or one of her siblings ceasing to be.
She took a deep breath. She needed to make the biggest decision of her life so far...to end her life to restore the proper reality, or to stay. Jon was dead, so to speak, and she was alive. She'd be effectively committing suicide.
She loved her life, even if it had its problems. And it wasn't just her. It was the countless number of things that were different just because she had been there. Her best friend, Jessica...who would she be friends with without her? Mallory had talked her out of some stupid decisions over the years...what if without her, she went through with even one of them?
"My reality is the only reality," she said, stubbornly, putting the stone away.
