Jon bent down and picked up the envelope. He walked across the room and placed the book down on the table there. He then opened the envelope and removed the letter within and began to read it.
*Dear Jon,
If you are reading this letter, then something has occurred and you need some more guidance from me. I know not the details of the events that may bring you to reading this note, and though I hope you never need it, I have prepared something to help you in a time of dire need.
The book that you found this note in contains all that I know of the mystical world. As you may have surmised, I had quite an interest in the supernatural, and devoted much of my life to discovering as much about it as I could. While the discovery of the wishing stone I left to you was the pinnacle of my efforts, I happened across a vast amount of information. I can only help the knowledge contained within this book will be able to help you.
I wish I could do more for you, Jon.
Your friend, always,
Grandpa.*
Jon put the letter down and picked the book back up. "Well, here's hoping there's something in here that can help me stop Athena, Grandpa."
Jon spent the next few hours reading through the book, stopping only briefly to explain to Karyn what he had found when she returned from the store.
Finally, at about 9 pm, the two sat to eat.
"So, find anything in the book that we can use?" Karyn asked.
"There's not much. There is a bit more info on the stone, which will be useful for getting things back to normal if we can get the stone back, but the majority of the book is just info on mystical creatures, and a few incantations."
"Incantations? Like spells?" Karyn asked.
"Yeah. Nothing over the top. One of the spells allowed me to instantly memorize all the info in the book. Of course, that one was located toward the back, so I had already read a lot of it myself. But I can bring the info to the front of my mind easily."
"Well, that's cool, if not very helpful for dealing with Athena."
"Yeah, there were a few other things in there, but I'm not sure how useful they'll be against Athena."
"We'll think of something." Karyn said. The two then continued to make small talk over the course of their meal.
The next morning, Jon snuck out of his grandfather's house, taking care not to wake Karyn up. He glanced at the time on his cell phone. "5:03." he whispered to himself. "Should be able to make it back to town by 8, at the latest."
He climbed into his grandfather's car and turned it on, hoping the noise wouldn't wake Karyn. He felt bad about leaving his friend here, but thanks to the info in the book he had acquired, he felt he had a chance against Athena. Having Karyn there would just mean another target for Athena's wrath. Besides, some of the protective spells could only apply to him, according to the book, which meant she would be more vulnerable than him anyway.
He pulled out of the driveway and headed back toward his home town. He was going to take care of this problem today...
