Jon was still struggling with whether or not to stop for the cop when all of a sudden the street started shaking violently. He looked into the rear view mirror and saw that the concrete in the street had risen up and formed a large hand, and was now holding the cop's car in place. Even from this distance, Jon could see the look of surprise on the cops face.
"Well, guess we don't need to worry about whether or not to stop for him..." Karyn said.
"I guess..." Jon said, as he began to push down on the accelerator again. "But that cop, he didn't see that as normal. He looked as surprised as we were. That means if she made a wish for people to remember, it's not just focused on the school."
"Maybe that's just the way Athena wants things?" Karyn suggested. "I mean, she seems to be going on a bit of a power trip."
"Hopefully Zoe is still logical enough to keep her from going totally overboard." Jon said.
"Do you actually think this is all Athena's doing, Jon?" Karyn asked. "Zoe's the one who stole the stone. I find it hard to believe that..."
"Stop it." Jon said. "Zoe may not be the best kid around, but she wouldn't do..." He looked into his mirror again, still able to see the large, stone hand holding up the cop car. "She wouldn't do things like this."
The pair continued to drive in silence, Jon focusing on the road and Karyn sending texts to all of their families and friends. After ten minutes of driving, they made it out of the town.
"How far do you think we need to go to get out of range?" Karyn asked, putting her cell phone back into her pocket.
"I dunno." Jon said flatly. "Grandpa's note didn't really say an exact range, just a guess."
"Well...where should we go?" Karyn asked. "I don't really want to sleep in the car."
"I know. I was thinking about that. We can go to my Grandpa's house. My mom and uncle have been cleaning it up, getting ready to sell it. But, he's on vacation this week with his family, and she's..." He glanced backward toward the town.
"Yeah. So, it should be empty." Karyn said, finishing Jon's thought. "I guess that makes sense. And going there, we should definitely be out of the stones range."
"Well, there's that." Jon said. "And maybe we'll be able to find something there that can help us deal with this. Someone to call, some other magical item. There has to be something."
Karyn nodded. The pair sat, once again, in an uncomfortable silence as they drove. After a few minutes of this, Karyn turned on the radio and let the music fill the car, hoping that it would allow them to, at least for a few minutes, get their minds off of what had happened back in their town.
