The front door opened and in walked Zoe.
"There you are, Athena," she said, walking towards them, but then stopped when she sensed that something was wrong. "What is it? What's wrong?"
Jane opened her hand, showing the talisman. "I'm sorry, Zoe. I found it in your room and used it."
Zoe looked around the room, seeming to look for something.
"What are you looking for?" Athena asked.
"I'm looking to see what changed."
"I changed," Jane said, standing up. "I turned myself into a witch."
"That's impossible," Zoe said. "You've been a witch for years. Even before I was born."
"That's what I told her," Athena said.
"But that's because everyone's memories changed," Jane said. "Right?"
Zoe shook her head. "No. The talisman doesn't work that way. If you shouldn't be a witch, then we should all notice it." She turned towards Athena. "Don't you remember the letter? It said that changes made will be seen for what they are - as differences, unless phrased otherwise."
"So, what does that mean?" Jane asked. "Is it broken?"
"No," Athena suddenly said. She had a look on her face like she just figured something out. "Don't you see? There's another artifact somewhere near here."
"Another one?" Jane asked. "How many of these things are there?"
Athena ignored her questions. She still considered Jane her friend, but she was finding it increasingly difficult to cope with her ignorance of witchcraft.
"It's common knowledge that when two powerful artifacts come into close contact with each other, they can sometimes cause malfunctions."
"Oh yeah, I forgot about that," Zoe said. "But wait. What's the other artifact? And who has it?"
"How should I know?" Athena said.
At that moment, the front door opened and in came Jon and his friend Karyn. They glanced at Zoe, Athena, and Jane, mostly ignoring them, and then walked upstairs.
