As Leonard took his first-period books out of his locker, he noticed a few girls walking by who were smiling at him. And a couple of them even said hi to him. It was a weird experience. Since he used to be an overweight unshaven geek, he obviously never attracted anyone. Especially girls like these.
"Hey, Lenny," a guy said. Leonard turned and saw two jocks. They were football players, since (like Leonard) they were wearing their jerseys. The one that spoke was Doug Townsend and his friend was Reggie Deckman. Leonard remembered both of them from the locker room, right after the swap the previous night.
"What are you doing with all those books?" Doug continued.
"They're for my Physics class."
"But you're not taking Physics," Doug said, looking slightly confused.
The thing was, Leonard was a little confused himself. "I'm not?" Leonard looked down at his science books and saw that they weren't science books at all. Instead they were math books. Geometry books, to be exact. That in itself was strange, because he was taking Trigonometry, which was what all the other Juniors were taking. Why was he a year behind everyone else?
Both jocks looked oddly at him. "Of course you're not. Your first class is Health and Fitness."
Health and Fitness? Leonard thought. He put his books back and closed his locker. Then he followed the two jocks to his "new" class, which ended up being a weight room. He had never been in the weight room before, obviously, so when he entered through the door, he stopped and looked around the room.
"What's with you, Lenny?" Reggie asked. "You look like you've never seen this place before."
"Huh? Oh, no. I was just ..." He couldn't think up an excuse. But, he supposed, it didn't really matter.
"You're taking this class too, huh?" he heard Jay ask. He turned around and saw him sitting on a bench at the edge of the room, then he sat down and joined him.
"I can't lift weights," he told Jay.
"Sure you can. Look at your body. You could probably lift 300 pounds."
"But I've never lifted weights before. I don't know what to do."
"I tried it once. On a dare. It didn't work out so well," Jay said. "But everything's different now. It should be a piece of cake." He flexed his muscular arm, showing Leonard that their bodies were indeed stronger than their old ones.
But Leonard already knew that. Already, just from walking around, he could tell. He used to sweat and grow tired a lot, but now walking was almost effortless.
"Well, he seems to be enjoying all of this," Jay said. Leonard looked up and saw Carl, who was standing at the entrance of the room, with a big grin on his face.
Carl turned towards them and said "All three of us are taking this class? Wow, what's the chance of that?"
"What are you three still doing in here?" Doug asked, from the other side of the room. "You have to change into your phys ed clothes. Come on," he said, waving them over.
Jay, Leonard, and Carl followed him and shortly later found themselves in the boys' locker room, where several guys were either getting undressed or putting on their gym clothes.
