"Hey, you're wasting water," said one of the jocks from outside the shower area.
Jay turned around and shut off the water, as did his three friends. Then they stared at each other's bodies. Without all the water and steam, they got a better look.
"Look at me," Carl said. "My arms are so big, I can barely wrap my hands around them."
"Hey, what are you guys doing in there?" another jock asked.
Slowly, they left the shower area and entered the locker area.
"Hey, Jay," he heard a voice say. He recognized it right away. It belonged to Tom Welles, a guy that seemed to make it his personal mission to pick on people that he viewed as inferior, which included Jay and his friends. "Forgetting something?" he asked, pointing to a table with a stack of towels on it.
"Uh, right." Jay picked up a towel and dried himself off. Then he walked over to a bench and sat down, right across from Tom. He was still in a daze.
"What's with you, man? We weren't that rough out there, were we?"
"Huh?"
"Earth to Jay," Tom said, waving his hand in front of Jay's face.
"Stop it," Jay snapped, pushing his hand away.
"Okay, jeez. I was just worried about you. I mean, the game is tomorrow and we can't lose one of out best players. Can we?" Then he punched Jay in the arm. Curiously, it didn't hurt as much as it usually did. "Hey, and you've got that big date with Zoe on Saturday."
"Zoe?"
"Yeah. Zoe Gibson? You know. Your girlfriend?"
"But," Jay said in a daze. "Zoe is dating Biff Meadows." Everyone knew that.
"Biff?" Tom laughed. "That geeky kid? Yeah, I don't think so. No way would Zoe date a loser like that."
Biff's a geek? Jay thought. And suddenly with that small piece of information, he put it all together. He had switched places with Biff. As impossible as it seemed, that must have been what happened. Jay was now the captain of the football team and he was now dating the most popular girl in school. And from what Tom said, Biff was now a geek, and was even probably head of chess club, just like Jay used to be.
Leonard sat down next to Jay, still drying himself off, even though he wasn't really wet anymore.
"Lenny," said a jock named Danny sitting across from Leonard. "Hey, Lenny."
Then Leonard got hit in the face with a wadded up towel. "Stop it," Leonard whimpered, putting up his hands defensively.
"Lenny, what's with you?"
No one had ever referred to Leonard as Lenny, so he didn't know that Danny was talking to him. And maybe Leonard was now a jock, but he still felt like a wimp. But whereas before, these other guys would throw things at him to be mean, this time they were just being playful. Leonard just wasn't used to that.
"I'm just not really feeling well," he said.
"Well, you better get well quick. The big game is tomorrow and you're our star quarterback."
A quarterback? But I can't play football, Leonard thought to himself.
"Oh, and Lenny?"
"Yeah?"
"I think you're dry enough now." Danny looked oddly at him. "Maybe put on some clothes?"
Leonard looked down at himself, seeing that Danny was right. He had been nervously rubbing himself with the towel. He moved it away from his body and stared down at his muscular chest, still not quite believing that all this was happening.
"Uh, where's my locker?" Leonard asked.
Danny looked at him strangely and pointed to one behind him, then got up and left.
"Where's mine?" Jay asked Tom.
"You're kidding, right?"
"Humor me."
Tom pointed at Jay's locker and he got up and opened it. Inside were the type of clothes that Biff usually wore. Now they were Jay's clothes.
On the other side of a row of lockers, Carl and Walter were getting dressed. Carl wore a gray tank-top that showed off his massive muscular arms, blue jeans, and sandals. Walter wore a tight red T-shirt (so tight that the contours of his chest were quite visible), blue jeans, and sandals.
Another football player, this one's name was Doug, stood up from his bench, fully dressed. "See ya later, Smack," he said to Walter, then he walked away.
Was that his new nickname? As a geek, bullies always called him Schmuckmeyer, because it sounded like his name Smukmeyer. But now they called him Smack? Considering he was now a football player, Walter could only assume it had something to do with tackling on the field. He shuddered, thinking about that. Obviously Walter wasn't into sports, and definitely not into football. He just couldn't imagine himself actually playing football. And the big game was the next night! He wondered if he could just not go.
Carl James and Walter "Smack" Smukmeyer walked around the row of lockers and saw that both Leonard and Jay were now fully dressed. Jay wore a plain white T-shirt, blue jeans, and sandals. Leonard wore a black spandex tank-top, a pair of tracksuit pants, and sneakers. Tom and all the other jocks were gone, so the four former-geeks had some time to themselves.
The four former-jocks continued to stare at each other until they heard the door open and a voice say "You're still here?"
They nearly jumped at the noise, then Biff turned around. It was Kyla Leeson, one the geekiest girls at the school. She was thin and small breasted, and like Randy was now, she had an acne-filled face and thick glasses. Her somewhat greasy hair was pulled back into a ponytail.
Biff approached her. "Do you know who I am?"
"Of course, I know who you are. You're Biff," she answered, looking at him strangely.
He sighed with relief. "So you know that I'm not supposed to be like this."
"Like what?"
"A geek."
"What are you talking about?"
"I'm the captain of the football team, you dweeb," he said.
Dismissing the name-calling, Kyla fell into laughter.
"What's so funny?" he asked, getting angrier.
"You? Playing football?" She continued to laugh. "And last time I checked, Jay Duncan was the captain of the football team."
"Jay Duncan? That little twerp?"
"Twerp? Biff, what are you talking about?" Kyla wasn't laughing anymore. Now Biff was disturbing her.
Biff turned back towards his friends, as an idea formed in his head. "We switched with them."
"Huh?" Chris said. "Switched with who?"
"Jay and his loser friends, that's who. Don't you get it? We have their lives, so they must have ours." He paused for a moment, thinking. "We have to find them."
Biff ran out of the room (he never felt so out of breath in his life for running for so short a time), and his friends jogged after him, leaving a confused Kyla behind.
"Where are you going?" she yelled after them.
