Five minutes later, the phone rang.
"Yeah?" Jon answered.
"Dr. Chester here, sorry to bother you. I was wondering if you're interested in experiencing the final stage of N-Cell symbiosis a little sooner."
"Maybe."
"Basically we stick a needle in your brain. Just a tiny one, just big enough to give the N-Cells an inroad to your brain. Then, they can start responding to your thoughts. The idea is that with the right regime of meditation, you can get them to absorb your whole brain and body completely in a matter of days. And even if you're slow, it should take a month at most. Up for it?"'
"It's not going to kill me?"
"No, far from it. But you shouldn't do this unless you're ready to be set free of... the constraints of having a traditional anatomical structure," Chester warned. "Something like that may take quite a while to get used to."
Jon paused to whisper to Karyn. She whispered something back.
"Well, go ahead and send the van over. At least one of us is up for it," Jon replied.
