I stood on the sidewalk waiting for the bus, it was my first day of high school and I was nervous. For some reason I always got nervous around big groups, I wasn't a nerd or anything just your average teenager but I was shy. Fortunately a few of my friends were attending the same school as me but they lived in different parts of the neighbourhood and so we would meet up at school. So here I was standing on my own while the other students at the stop were hanging in groups. As I clutched my books to my chest I thought about my friends; there was Alan, all summer Alan had started to show a keen interest in the latest fashion trends. He was really becoming a fashionisto, he had brought lots of new outfits ready for school and had gone to the salon yesterday to get his hair done. His body had started developing as well and I'm sure soon he will be a hit with the ladies.

I wasn't too bad myself; for my first day I wanted to dress nice but I also didn't want to give the girls any ideas, in my opinion I think my overall look was cute; I was wearing a white tank top along with a light pink pleated skirt and white sneakers. I wore minimal makeup and had painted my nails and toenails the same color as my skirt, the handbag that draped from my shoulders was white and I had my brown hair tied into a ponytail that fell down just past my neck. Next there was Justine. She was the sportiest of the group, she was always going to the games, her favourite sport was football (like any other girl) and she had a season ticket to the local team which she shared with her mom although she sometimes took Fiona. She was well built and had been working out all summer and she was hoping to try out for the school team once try-outs had started. Justine had short blonde hair which she liked to style so that it was always spikey; she also wore baggy jeans and more often than not a sports jersey of one of the many teams that she supported.

Finally there was Fiona. She was the leader of the group; she always took charge and decided what to do. She wasn't as muscular as Justine but she was still pretty strong. Unlike Justine, Fiona was very lazy, her room was always messy even when she had company around. A fact her father hated. As I thought about Fiona warm feelings started to run through me, we have been friends for years but lately I've been hoping that we would develop into something more. The bus pulled up shaking me out of my reverie; I followed the other students on to the bus. Being the last one to get on I hesitated, nervous, "you coming kid or what?" the bus driver asked, I nodded took a deep breath and got on. As I climbed up the steps into the bus I got a couple of wolf whistles from the students at the back, I blushed. "Hey knock it off guys!" a familiar voice shouted, it was Fiona "Hey Alex, over here." I smiled as I saw her waving and headed to where she was sitting.

I was glad that Fiona would be sharing the bus ride with me. "Are you ok?" Fiona asked as I sat down next to her, "Yeah" I replied "Just nervous" "Don't be, it'll be fine." She gave me a quick reassuring hug. I looked at her, she was wearing her usual getup; ripped denim jeans and a red t-shirt that looked like it hadn't been washed in a while and her breasts hung loosely, her sneakers were also in a bit of a state as well and she needed new ones. Her black hair was cut short and messy, looking like she had just got out of bed, which she probably. One of the older girls sitting at the back approached our seat and leaned over "hey cutie," she said "haven't seen you before are you new?" I nodded "Yes, it's our first day" referring to Fiona and I, "Well then I'm Jessica. Nice to meet you" she offered her hand and I shook it "I'm Alex and this is Fiona" I said introducing us "Hi" Fiona said but Jessica ignored her talking only to me "fancy coming to sit with us at the back? I'm sure we can make room for you." Jessica turned to her friends and yelled "Oi Emily! Budge up!" Emily looked at Jessica annoyed but then started move up her seat. "Err, no thank you." I replied shyly "I think I'll stay here with my friend thank you." "What's the matter?" Jessica asked "You don't want to hang out with the big girls?" "He said he's not interested" Fiona piped up drawing Jessica's attention to her "and what's it to you?" she asked squaring her shoulders up looking for a fight "are you his girlfriend?" "No" Fiona replied and my heart sank a little at that "but I am his friend so leave us alone." Jessica was about to respond when the driver shouted down the bus "Hey, quite down you two! Or I'll throw you off the bus" she said. "Fine!" Jessica said defeated "I'll see you later" she said to the both of us while looking menacingly at Fiona before she headed back to her seat.

"Are you ok?" Fiona asked, there she was always looking out for me "Yeah just a bit shaken" I replied "I'm more worried about you, we're not even at school yet and it looks like you've already made an enemy." Fiona laughed looking back at Jessica "Relax, it'll be ok. So she's older than me that doesn't matter, and remember I can look after myself ok?" I nodded but I was still worried. We rode the rest of the journey in silence. Before long the bus pulled up at the school so I gathered my books and got off the bus ready for my first day of high school.
