David, on the other hand, stood back and watched. The beach was empty, but that didn't stop David's dad from dutifully watching over the rolling surf situated in the middle of downtown Hillsburg. She scanned the waterline, occasionally picking up a pair of pink binoculars to see off into the distance, a wide grin plastered on her face the entire time.
But what about the office tower that had been there, David wondered? And all the people that worked there? Had his father's transformation just erased them all? At least it was a Saturday, so the building would've been close to empty.
Just then, another car pulled into the empty parking lot. David thought it looked familiar, and once he got a look inside realized it was Pete Meyers, one of his dad's coworkers and good friends. He stepped out of the car with a sour look on his face.
"Morning, David," He said as he crossed the parking lot in his business suit. "Can't believe I got suckered into working the weekend." He stopped a moment, and looked at Barbie perched atop the guard tower. "I gotta say, I envy your dad's dedication. She always comes in, no matter what the job might be."
Pete continued on, walking right onto the sandy beach in his dress shoes. As he trudged along, briefcase in hand, David became even more confused. How the hell would Pete do his normal job on an empty beach? He thought about watching how the scene would play out. But then he started to think that his dad might need a companion...
