"I SO can't wait for the game tonight, Kayla!" Janice said to David. "It's going to be, like, so fun!"
David just stared. So she was calling him Kayla now. This was getting hard to keep up with. At that moment middle-aged man walked up and sat next to Janice, and tossed his new blonde locks behind his shoulder with a feminine flick of his head. He looked at her hands.
"OMG, Kayla, I LOVE your nails!" He said.
"Thanks Kayla!" Janice giggled, "Yours are totally cute too."
Of course they were, since they were identical - glossy purple and white, alternating on each finger. David looked down and saw the same manicure on his hands. And on everybody else in the cafe, and apparently they all thought they were some teenager named Kayla. David looked out the window - everyone he saw outside was dressed the same as well. Was the whole town like this now? His family? He had to get back and find out.
He made it quickly out the door, barely noticing that everyone in the coffee shop had picked up a hair brush that hadn't been there a moment ago and began brushing their hair. They had a game to get ready for, after all.
David tried to keep his eyes forward as he made his way home. How was he the only one noticing the changes? It was a gauntlet of "Hiii Kayla!" and "Go Wildcats!" the whole way. It was distracting enough, but trying to brush his hair as he walked slowed his pace a bit too. But he HAD to get ready, it was a big game tonight.
He paused for a second to stash the brush in his purse and pulled out a purple ribbon. It only took a second to tie the bow just right in his hair, and he was off again and able to pick up the pace a bit.
He sometimes wondered how he was able to find his house, 2603 Maple Lane, seeing as how every house in town had that address, and looked exactly the same. But that wasn't worth dwelling on right now. He had to get ready! He walked in the front door, and saw that Kayla, Kayla, and Kayla were already home.
"You ready for tonight, Kayla?" the young man in the cheerleader uniform asked him.
"OMG I'm pumped! Let me just grab my bag and we'll go!" He bounded up the stairs two at a time, filled with nervous energy. He went into his room, which was right between Kayla's and Kayla's rooms, and across from Kayla's. He knew it was his because it said "KAYLA" in big pink letters on the door.
Kayla grabbed the gym bag from under his pink bed, and grabbed the makeup bag from his vanity and went back downstairs.
"READY!" he said. The four of them piled into Kayla's car and sped off, blasting One Direction as they all sang along. The pop music helped calm the butterflies in Kayla's stomach, and the beat helped him run through the cheer routine in his head. He hoped he remembered his moves!
