Lake Point High School, cafeteria
Jay Duncan had been speaking with Carl James. Carl James had been zapped into a Geek Goth, and aside from a heightened interest in dark, ghoulish, or morbid things, he was still the person Jay knew.
By now, Jay had received the text from his mother updating him on the Restoration Guns situation. Now Jay felt free to mention the Restoration Guns to anyone, as his mother said they were freed from the locker Jeffries had placed them in. Before, he had refrained from mentioning them because he didn't want to get people's hopes up. But now his mother had told him it was safe to tell his friends. Athena, meanwhile, had already told a few people about the Restoration Guns anyway.
Meanwhile, Athena DeVries, Zelda Whitefield, and Sabrina Johnson were talking with basketball player Tyler Jackson and Coach Felicia Barry, who were looking after instigators Zach Jones, Clyde Meehan, Danny Foster, and Starla Stanfield. The four of them had been forced to sit at the one table while others looked on.
"I think they're sorry for how they acted." Tyler said. "They all look very ashamed of themselves now. Even the clown." He pointed at Danny Foster, who had been zapped with the Clown Gun and earlier had instigated a food fight.
"Don't worry about them." Coach Barry said. "We'll talk to the principal about what punishment they should face later. For now, Enid Parkes has suggested they be forced to clean up the cafeteria. She's really upset at their wasting so much food with a food fight."
"And zapping her with a Transformation Gun too, I'm sure." Athena said.
"That, too." Coach Barry said. The lunchlady Enid Parkes was glaring at the four offenders, and looked ready to hand out the mops and buckets.
Jay Duncan overhead this, and was about to join in, when he got a text on his cell phone. It was from Leonard Drullers.
Leonard: Come quick. Mr. Matheson is back, and he's been zapped by a Transformation Gun. But he wants to teach a class!
Jay: What? He wants to teach math at a time like this?
Leonard: Yeah. He's dressed like a pirate or something, and he brought in a box full of stuff. I think he might have a Transformation Gun.
Jay turned to Athena and the others. "Leonard just texted me. He's still in the classroom where we left him, and he thinks Mr. Matheson might have a Transformation Gun."
"I'm coming with you." Athena said. "If there's trouble, the pendant should help me."
Leaving Zelda, Sabrina, and the others behind to continue helping out at the cafeteria, Jay and Athena headed through the halls back to the classroom where they had seen Leonard before. It seemed like they were running out of Transformation Guns to find, but if there were still more in the school, they needed to be found and turned in.
They soon arrived at Leonard's classroom, and looked with surprise at Mr. Matheson and what he was doing.
Mr. Matheson was well-known around Lake Point High as a pretty straightforward math teacher. He was always punctual, and encouraged his students to always arrive on time as well. He was known for keeping things on-topic during math class, so discussions of non-math related subjects rarely happened while class was in session.
Lately, he had enhanced a few math classes with some hypothetical math-based scenarios incorporating recent or local events. What he was doing now was similar to that, but very strange.
Mr. Matheson was dressed in a sea captain's coat and hat, and was now displaying a sea chart near the whiteboard. The class, which now included Leonard Drullers, track and field star Jason Knight, Rebecca Fadil, Zoe Gibson, and the Emo Gun-affected Trevor Blake, were watching with confusion as Mr. Matheson was teaching a math class in a manner most unlike the Mr. Matheson they knew.
"So," said Mr. Matheson. "Our brave and bold crew of treasure hunters finally found the lost treasure the great pirate Eyepatch McGrew had abandoned on Goldhook Island. The treasure was a fortune: 800,000 Spanish doubloons, 50,000 emeralds, and one million gold coins. There were thirty crew members in all, so the plan was to divide all the treasure evenly among the lot of 'em'. But then half of them turned out to be mutineers, stole half the treasure, and left the rest behind."
"So, here be my first problem for all ye landlubbers. Take what treasure was left with the non-mutineers, and divide it evenly with all of them."
"Second, the mutineers later met with a sorry fate. Having gone sailing without a qualified navigator or a good helmsman, they dashed their ship on the reefs surrounding another island not far from Goldhook Island. One third of them fell into the ocean and became food for the sharks. The other two thirds fought with each other on the island over the devoured third's shares of the treasure. Assuming that prior to their accident, their dividing the treasure went the same as the non-mutineers, how much do each of the remaining two thirds get if each of them gets half of the third third's share?"
Jay Duncan decided at this point he'd heard enough. He raised his hand to speak. "Excuse me, Mr. Matheson."
"Aye." Mr. Matheson said. "Do ye have an answer?"
"In a bit." Jay said. "That is quite a lot to take in. I'm assuming you'll have it written down like you always do, so we can work it out without forgetting the details. But that's not what I want to ask you. I wanted to ask if you'd been zapped by a Transformation Gun, because if you don't mind my saying so, you are acting a bit strange."
Athena stood silently nearby, ready to intervene in case something happened.
"Aye, that I did, laddie." Mr. Matheson said in an accent unlike his normal tone. "The Seafarer Gun is what zapped me. Some scurvy dog out in the hall did it just cause he thought it was funny. I took it from him and told him te scrub the poop deck and by that I mean the restroom floor."
"So do you have it?" Jay asked.
