"File here says you're a Baptist, and a rather devout one at that. Is that correct?" the orderly asked, glancing at Laura.
"Yes, yes I am," Laura said, nervously wondering what tactic her captors were employing.
"But at the time of your capture, you were wearing a crucifix," the orderly said. "Most protestant nominations have ceased to use the crucifix, opting for a simpler and less grim icon of the cross alone. Why were you wearing it?"
Laura frowned, not sure how to respond. She thought it was meaningless, just a variation she chose on a whim. But was it merely such an arbitrary choice? Was there some deeper meaning they had already made her forget?
No, no, this all a trick, a head game Laura decided. But when she looked down she was wearing a crucifix necklace. Even if she couldn't trust her memory, she couldn't argue with what she saw with her own eyes. Where these monsters trying to do here? Laura tried to clear her head, but that darned humming made it impossible to think correctly. Her head throbbed. Everything was so fuzzy. Was the first question a trick? Did she only think she was Baptist because the way the orderly had phrased the first question? Or were they merely exploiting a technicality of symbols to confuse her? The more she thought about it, the less certain Laura was.
"I don't know!" Laura cried at last, frantic. "I really just- what are you- I don't know!"
The orderly gave a small smile. "Very well. There are no wrong answers here, but we can leave that line of questioning for another time, allow you to sit and think on it. Moving on the the second part of our session..."
