Inside the box was another box, this one much smaller and made of wood. Laura opened it and saw a small gold-colored ring inside. She pretty much doubted that it was made of real gold, though. Why would someone give her something so expensive?
She picked it up and looked at it. It wasn't flashy or gaudy or anything like that. It was just a simple metal ring. Normally, she wasn't one to wear jewelry, but this seemed like a special circumstance. What was the harm? It wasn't like she was being showy. In fact, she figured most people wouldn't even notice it, unless she pointed it out.
Shrugging, she put the ring on her finger (not her wedding ring finger), then threw away the box that her gift came in and went about her business.
If she would have taken a closer look at her gift, maybe she would have noticed the inscription carved into the inner circumference of the ring. They were runes. And now that she was wearing the ring, Laura and everything about five to ten feet around her would slowly change. Within that limited space, the ring would slowly change reality into something else.
