Jon sighed, disappointed that the flute was mostly useless. He wondered if it was worth anything to a museum or even a pawn shop. Opening the bathroom door he was more than a little startled to find his younger sister Zoe standing in the hall.

He looked down at the fourteen year-old. She was going through a rebellious phase, or maybe she was destined to wear black clothes and dark makeup. The two used to be pretty close, but grew apart in the past few years until he felt like he hardly knew her anymore. Now she was just standing there, looking up at him expectantly.

"Zoe? Do you need to use the bathroom?"

"Um, no. Did you call?" she replied. She seemed a little spacey to Jon.

"No, I didn't say anything." Jon waited for her to reply, but she just kept standing there. Rolling his eyes, Jon walked around her into the hall. "Go ahead and use the bathroom, and wipe that crap off your face while you're at it."

Zoe's eyes narrowed and her mouth turned into the frown he was now used to. "Jerk," she muttered. Jon walked back to his room as she slammed the bathroom door.

Jon started in on his homework and quickly forgot his sister's oddness. Before he knew it his mom was calling him down for dinner. He sat down and helped himself to a pork chop, then did a double take as Zoe arrived at the table. Her ever present dark and overdone eyeshadow and black lipstick were gone. She still wore her black clothes and her anti-social attitude, but it was enough a change to jog Jon's memory of their earlier encounter.
