There was a knock at the door. "Kevin? Honey, dinner is ready." It was a woman's voice and from the way she was talking, Ally figured that she was the boy's mother.
"Uh ... okay," Ally said. It was so weird hearing a boy's voice instead of her own.
She walked to the window and looked out. The sun was just going down, so it was still light enough to see. She was in a neighborhood she didn't recognize. But everything seemed fairly normal. It wasn't like she entered a universe where fairies and unicorns existed.
She walked back to the mirror and saw the boy's reflection. He was definitely a teenager, maybe 15 or 16. Definitely much older than Ally. It was so weird being in a boy's body and she hoped that she wouldn't be stuck this way.
"Please, shimmer again," she told the mirror. She stood there, waiting for at least a minute. But nothing happened.
There was another knock on the door. "Kevin? Did you hear me? Dinner's ready. Come on down and eat something."
What was Ally going to do? She knew nothing about this Kevin or his family. And she really didn't want to interact with people who were basically complete strangers to her.
