As they walked to his new quarters, Charlie asked what happened with the other outlanders.
"Some died," White said.
"And the others?"
White sighed. "Listen. I'm a soldier. I fight the squids. That's what I do. I'm not a history expert. But ... there are rumors that the last one, the one that arrived about a decade ago, is still alive somewhere on the planet."
"What year was he from?"
"Actually, it was a she. Dr. Samantha Wilson, that was her name. She ..."
Charlie stopped him. "Did you say Samantha Wilson?"
"Yeah?"
"I know her. We went to school together. I mean, if that's the same Samantha that you're talking about. We actually went out on a date. Man, that was a long time ago. I haven't even thought about her until you ... what? What is it?"
White was making an odd expression. "Maybe that's why you're here."
"What do you mean?" Charlie asked.
"Maybe she's the one using the machine. You said that you know her. It makes sense."
"So, someone I dated once back in high school decides to bring me across time and space to this planet? Why? We only dated once. I'm sure there are other people more important to her than me."
"Maybe you're more important to her than you think." The Colonel pointed to a door at the end of the corridor. "Those are your quarters."
