With this gift, he'd no doubt be able to start his fantastic life and supernatural adventures. For now, he held and looked into the telescope while peering out the window. Nearby, a jogger was wandering. "Interesting.." He opened the window to get a closer look and focused just right so he could zoom in close.
When he twisted the obsidian rings, he could see thru her bones and organs! Her heart beating visibly, and eerily to Leonard's eyes. "Interesting.. But nothing an X-ray couldn't do in literally any ordinary hospital." Already less-than-amused, he turned it the ring's dial back and then the whole street was, farmland? What the- apparently he was looking back in time from before the street's formation.Just as he thought, it could look thru time too! But ultimately Autumn Town being an old rural farm centuries ago wasn't really anything too exciting, just a bunch of wheat really. Some other dozen settings were a dull surprise as well, from gamma radiation, to digital vision able to see the circuits on her mp3 player device, and even one peering into her mind.
"Maybe this one will reveal she's a secret agent, or alien princess in disguise staying on earth to watch over for rebels planning to overthrow her father the Galactic Overlord!"
'5 laps a day will take off approximately 400 calories plus the calories lost at the gym and my regimen, just the right amount of weight lost. At this rate I'll slim up and when I head to the clubs and yoga classes....' Leonard scratched his head, he was hoping for something a little more, personal? He flipped the rings again to adjust the lens, eventually stumbling upon one that gave out 'secrets.'
'I cheated on my ex-boyfriend. I smoked away from home because my parents wouldn't understand. I kissed a girl and I liked it. I stole a reese's peanut butter cup from a gas station because the clerk wouldn't take my credit card.' All of her deepest, most intimate secrets became audio noise, playing as a podcast to Leonard's ears.
Leonard groaned, what was all this crap? There was, absolutely nothing really special or that interesting about her day to day thoughts or deepest facts kept in confidences so far as he was paying attention. This wasn't why he wished for this telescope. He could find this out on any internet gossip column.
"I guess I'll have to wish again if I want to find something more, super cool." He said.
From what he analyzed, the telescope had the power to scope out the extraordinary, but as long as everything around him was ordinary it's power was uselessly boring.
Perhaps, if this girl was too ordinary, he'd just have to make it so the telescope could quite literally bring to existence the extraordinary.
