In general Jon is portrayed as a pretty good standing guy/girl
He wouldn't leave somone petrified like that even his worse enemy. Being the 'good' guy tends to allow for forgivness.
It's not really too much of a stretch to want to free a sphinx if only for companionship or learning to fly
