Maybe for whatever reason, she gets paid under the counter. That would be difficult in a high school as it's a government institution, but I could totally see her going to someone's house to fix their computer and then getting paid in cash, and a lot more restaurants work that way than you'd think.
I suppose the other option is street busking.
