my first thought as i stepped out of the airlock of the crashed ship was how dark it was. was it night? or.. no it was just a really bad looking storm. it was amazing how realistic the clouds looked. i noticed some people around me either rushing to shelter or stepping out of shelter in order to look up at the sky.
When i heard the thunder clap and felt the first few droplets of rain i understood why some people were rushing to shelter. When i looked up again and watched the lightning light up the sky in a multibranching silver explosion of light i understood why some people were coming out to watch the storm.
i grinned and walked on keeping my head kindof turned up to the light show in the sky over the city, it was awesome on a level of needing a new word to descrive it.
Again i felt startled all of a sudden by the realization i was walking on four legs an dhaving no real problems with it. I couldnt begin to guess how the game managed that, on one hand it felt like i was completly in control, but it felt as natarul walking on four legs as it was on two in rl.
As i was walking along thinking about walking i bumped into a guy who aslo hadnt been watching where he was going. on four legs i was fairly hard to knock down but the other guy was on his butt from the collsion.
"sorry about that, here let me help you up." I said, feeling guilty for not watching where i was going and extending a hand down to the guy. He was wearing a fairly odd set of clothing, what was odd about it was how normal it looked. he was wearing blue jeans and a plain white t-shirt. the only things that set him apart was the orange hunting jacket, red baseball cap and sniper rifle... wait a second...
The guy looked up at my hand and then looked up at the rest of my body before laughing. He accepted my hand and pulled himself up. "hows that for irony? i buy this game for a chance to hunt some serious game animals and the first game animal i meet knocks me on my ass and then offers to help me up."
I felt a little offended at beign called a game animal but i dont think he meant anything bad by it and it was kinda funny. I introduced myself and asked what he meant about hunting.
turns out his name was chance('no seriously thats my first name'he says) and that in RL he's one of the worlds top whitetail deer hunters. But after hearding about the game and the chance it gave people to hunt stuff you only hear about in fairy tales he decided to give it a shot.
"so where are you headed?" chance asked.
"to find my girl freind. i bought this game so i could spend some time with her seeing as we live so far apart." i said as i started walking down the street. I was about to ask chance if he knew a good way to find people when a scraglly looking kid holding a piece of paper ran up to us.
"Message for david from suzie." the kid said handing me the note before running off again. I noticed a sign he was wearing on his back. 'igglebees message couriers.. because pmail is so lame.'
I unfolded the note and read it out loud. "hi david, i imagine your in the game by now and im sorry i couldnt be there to welcome you to the game but i got a call from my sister, (oh and as a note you might want to check your settings to make sure the game informs you if you get a call while playing) and she wanted me to get home right away, family emergency or somethign, anyways hopefully ill be able to see you in the game when i get back but till then dont wait up for me, my sister didnt say what was wrong and i dont know how long i'll be gone." I read it again, making sure i had read right. "...sonova." I said to myself, feeling kindof depressed that i wouldnt be able to see suzie. right then the rain started falling and i was distracted from my dissapointment by the feeling of rain falling on my cervid lower half.
"well that blows." chance said. talking about the note. I looked at it, noticing it was getting wet in the down pour and that the ink was running as the paper degraded.
"Yeah.." i said as i looked around. "... but why should that stop me from enjoying this game? this place is amazing, im sure theyres more to do than just hang out with my girlfreind here." I could feel my spirits rising even as the rain intensified to a torrential downpour.
"Like maybe find someplace out of the rain?" chance suggested.
