That night Athena lay on her bed looking through the contacts on her new phone, hoping to find someone she could talk to. The problem with cell phones is nobody remember a persons specific number anymore, she wanted to call Zoe, just to have something from her old life around, in the mist of all the alien experience, but she didn't know what number to call. She was just hoping that being born into this family still meant that Athena and Zoe had been friends, had at least been in school together like they were since the second grade, even if they weren't as close as they were before. She needed something familiar, which neither her face, her house, or her family could offer her at the moment. She needed to know at least she still had her best friend.
She found the name, and sat and stared at it till the screen went blank with a screen saver. What would happen when she called? Would her friend be there or someone she didn't know, or someone who hated her for her family? Zoe was never a fan of Sarah, none of the Goths were, Athena herself wasn't either for that matter, though she was certainly gaining perspective. She decided on a text, a simple text to test the waters, and avoid having the venom that she would have spit had a McMillan called her in her previous life.
"hey are you busy" simple. clean.
Then she waited. The first ten minutes are the worst, before you realize you need to keep your mind busy by doing something else. Staring at a clock, imaging reactions and responses.
BETH! it's time for dinner! Come down!
Athena sighed and went down, her phone in her pocket next to scarp of paper, waiting.
