This had to be an effect of one or a combination of the wishes that had been made yesterday, Jon told himself. He needed to say something, but he didn't want to talk about the stone in front of Zoe, so he sealed his lips as his best friend and his sister gushed over each other the rest of the way to school.
Jon, however, would not make it the entire way with them, as a push to the back of his shoulder caught him off-guard.
"Hey, Gibson!" Biff Meadows turned around as he ran past the trio of teenagers and started jogging in place ahead of them, but then his face fell. "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to hit you that hard."
Jon recovered, gave a forced smile, and gave a small wave as if to say "I'm good." Which he would have actually said if he had, in fact, been good.
"What are you doing walking so slowly, come job with me the rest of the way."
Jon did not want to do this. Karyn gave him a look as if to say "is this a stone thing?" Jon gave Karyn a look as if to say "maybe?"
"Come on, it'll be good for you!" the football player nudged as he jogged in place. "I bet your mom would approve."
"He's probably right," Zoe acknowledged, giving her brother a gentle elbow to the side. "Go on, I want to talk to Karyn anyway."
Reluctantly, Jon acquiesced to his sister and the jock that had suddenly taken an interest in him, and after a few moments to catch his breath, he found himself trying to keep pace with one of the top athletes in his school.
