Opening her nightstand drawer, she retrieved the stone that she had inherited from her late grandfather, knowing exactly what wish to make. "I wish..."
She paused. Sarah knew exactly what she wanted to wish for, but she wasn't sure how the idea had gotten into her head. After a moment, she decided that it didn't matter why she wanted to make this particular wish, she knew it was the one she wanted to make.
"I wish I could see what life is like in Lillian McMillan's shoes."
The stone warmed in Sarah's hand. Sarah blinked. When she opened her eyes again, there was a pair of shoes on the floor before her. It was a pair of chestnut-colored suede Ugg boots. And they were in exactly Sarah's size.
Something seemed familiar about them. Yes, Sarah had seen Lillian wearing these shoes before, but that wasn't it. Sarah felt a sense of ownership over them that she didn't understand. Maybe that was a side-effect of the wish?
Whatever it was, Sarah felt compelled to put these shoes on, and so she tentatively pulled one onto her right foot. And then her left. And she placed both feet firmly on the floor--
"Hello, Sarah."
The girl practically tripped where she stood.
"Lillian?" she called out to her room.
"No," the voice replied almost warmly, "I'm a magical projection-recording who's here to help guide you."
"Guide me?"
"You wanted to see what it was like in Lillian McMillan's shoes, right?" There was almost a giggle behind these words that Sarah didn't understand.
"That's what I wished for, yes."
"Well, I am Lillian's shoes. And I'm going to grant your wish." Once again the voice seemed to be giggling, like they knew something that Sarah did not. But it was a friendly giggle, like someone who didn't want to spoil a surprise party. "Now go open up your closet, let's see what kind of outfit Lillian would put together."
Lillian McMillan arrived home, put her backpack into the coat closet, and made her way up the stairs and into her wonderful bedroom. Her home base. The room that most defined who she was.
She absolutely reveled in it.
Lillian knew she had the perfect life, and she wasn't going to take it for granted. She was well-liked at school, she had access to magic, she had an amazing girlfriend... Lillian had no idea how she'd gotten so lucky. And she wasn't entirely sure why this day, of all days, that feeling seemed so unique.
But she did need to get out of her sweaty school clothes and into something comfortable for the afternoon. Maybe the romper she'd gotten at Anthropologie, or the sun dress from Nordstrom. Lillian opened up her massive walk-in closet, and... in that moment she felt a slight shiver go down her back. Was someone using magic nearby?
Lillian quickly tried to sense if anything was amiss, but nothing seemed to be. So she returned her attention to her closet, and her hands reached for a plain red cotton turtleneck and a simple A-line, knee-length black skirt, both of which had been bought at Target. Was this what she'd been planning to wear?
Ah well, the outfit looked very comfortable. And so the girl put it on.
