Robyn Duncan was just leaving school after basketball practice. Lake Point High School didn't have a fantastic basketball program for girls, but Robyn was indisputably the best player in the program's history.
And she was stuck on a team that barely had enough players to meet the minimum roster requirements. If only more girls at school were interested in basketball. If only the players around her were just a bit better. Robyn was convinced she could lead even a half-decent team to a deep playoff run, if only she had a half-decent team to play on.
And then she saw it. A small box with a note and a strange stone inside. Robyn read the note. Wishes? She couldn't believe it, she'd have to try it out.
Turning around to survey her surroundings, she chose a target. "I wish the blue branch in that tree was red."
Nothing happened. Robyn was disappointed, but not surprised. Of course the "magic stone" wasn't really magic. She let out a heavy sigh. "I just wanted to improve the team. I just wish the girls at my school all wanted to join the girl's basketball team."
There was a brief flash in Robyn's field of vision, but she didn't pay it any attention. Even if it wasn't magic, the stone she'd found did look cool, so she took it with her as she trudged on home.
