Jonnie and Karyn were already sitting down about to eat their sandwiches when Jen arrived, with Samantha in tow.
"This had better be big," said Samantha. "I can't imagine what things could happen that you couldn't just tell me without anyone else around. We need to trust each other."
"Yeah..." said Jen and sat down anyway. She reached into her purse and pulled out a reddish colored rock. "Me and Jonnie, our grandfather died last week, as far as we know. He left us something. This."
Samantha looked at the rock. "What's that? Let me guess... he left you a mine worth a million dollars and that's a sample from it."
"No."
"He left you his rock collection? He left you a rare meteorite?"
"He left me a magic stone. A literal magic stone. I wish my hair will be green for the next thirty seconds." Behind the table, someone tripped. Their drink, which was green, went flying and into Jen's hair. "Hey!" she yelled as she grabbed a handful of napkins. "I didn't mean it that way!" She looked back but the student who tripped wasn't anyone she recognized.
Samantha laughed but said "I think we need to get some food before the lunch period is over."
In the thirty seconds it took to dry Jen's hair, she said "I think I just got unlucky. I wish that my hair was green for the next thirty seconds as if it was naturally green."
This time it worked. "Also, I wish we have cheeseburgers here." The food appeared in front of both Jen and Samantha.
"How did you DO that?" asked Samantha, in surprise.
"I told you, it's a magic stone. It grants wishes. It also changes reality. Nobody will think these burgers appeared from thin air. They'll think we went through the line and got them the normal way. They'll remember that we did it and our lunch cards will show that we used them today. Is this big enough for you?"
"Well.... yes. How could it not be? What kind of wishes can you make?"
"Anything that covers a relatively close range. Maybe a few miles or so. Is there something you wanted?"
"She's going to tell you to make Sarah McMillan a lesbian," said Jonnie.
"She is not!" said Jen.
"You seriously think," said Samantha, "that I'd tell my girlfriend, who can do magic, that I want her to magically break up with me? Because if I wanted to make Sarah a lesbian, it would be to go out with her. No, I'd never do that. But why don't you try it, Jen? Wish for long blonde hair and big breasts, for the next, oh, few days?"
"I don't think..." said Jen.
Samantha grinned. "Do it!" Then Karyn said "Yes, you should try it, I had to put up with it." Samantha moved forward to kiss Jen and whispered "Try it, it might be fun."
It was hard to refuse. "I wish that until Sunday, I have long blonde hair and big breasts like Sarah."
The weights on her chest seemed heftier. Golden hair cascaded over her shoulders. Jonnie laughed until she realized it had happened to her too. "Wait, only you wished for it."
"I get it," said Jen. "We're twins. If you change reality so that one of us looks different, for reality to make sense the other one has to look different too."
"Or it could make us not be identical twins," said Jonnie.
"No, they couldn't, because...."
"Because what?" saked Samantha.
Because they had wished to be identical twins and a second wish couldn't reverse that. "Forget it, Samantha. It just couldn't, this has to do with another wish.
Karyn smirked.
"Something's going on," said Samantha.
"I can't... It's difficult to explain," said Jen. "I'll let you know sometime."
Samantha looked between Jen, and Karyn, and then Jonnie. "I'd think a magic stone is difficult to explain but you had no problem doing it. Something tells me that this one is more difficult than that because you might not like what I'd say about it."
Karyn whispered to Jen, "It isn't fair to make someone your girlfriend by wish."
"Ssh," said Jen. "I didn't wish for it anyway, it just happened."
"Will you please tell me what this is all about?" said Samantha.
This time Jonnie responded. "Well, you see...."
