Jonnie sat down beside Karyn. She knew that the list said she was still friends with Karyn, though if it hadn't she would have wished that she was anyway. "Karyn, we need to talk," she said.
"Hi Jonnie," said Karyn. "I see your sister's busy. Does this have something to do with the magic stone?"
"Well, it sort of does," said Jonnie. "I used it. I figured you should know about it." Seeing Karyn get alarmed at that sentence, Jonnie continued explaining. "No, no, I don't know what you're thinking of, but nothing like that! It's just that wishes change what people remember and I figured you ought to know."
"So what is it you wished for? The way those wishes work, I wouldn't know unless you told me."
"Well, I used to be called Jon."
"You were a guy? And you wished to become a girl? I don't see why anyone would do that, but...."
"It's an experiment, I wanted to see what it would be like, and your guess is close but that's not all of it. I wished to become two girls. Jen isn't just my sister, she's me. I went to sleep as one person and woke up as two."
"Incredible. Does she know this?"
"Of course she knows this. We're the same person--we remember exactly the same thing up to going to sleep last night. Everyone else knows us as twins, which is a good reason for us to share a lot and to be very close to each other. I also made it natural to act as sisters so we don't do something without thinking that looks strange."
"But you are twins," said Karyn. "As far as I'm concerned. You're normal people. Twins can be really close, but they're still different. You sit next to each other, your lockers are next to each other, you share clothes, you like the same foods, and you look the same, but you're not both dating Samantha, and you don't always wear the same things. If I tell you something, your sister doesn't automatically hear it."
"Karyn, maybe the best thing to do is to just keep it in the back of your head but keep treating us like sisters. That's what I chose. I wanted to try being sisters. Right now we're just like you said. I'm not dating Samantha. If you tell me something, Jen won't hear it unless I tell her myself, though I have no idea what you might want to tell to only one of us. We may be the same person in two bodies but there's no way to see that most of the time. If we were to walk along the street, everyone would see sisters, and I want it that way, and so does Jen. Okay?"
"Sure."
Jonnie grinned. "I appreciate it, Karyn. Anyway it looks like we've arrived. I don't think the school day is really going to be that different, but I think it's going to feel different now that I'm going to be sitting beside myself. Talk to you at lunch, and I think I can guess that Jen will be there too."
