Officer Kurt Maybourn turned to his partner. "What do you think? We have a report of phone lines down to a section of town, and the repair crews sent to repair it not responding."
"Odd," said Officer Danielle Chase. "What are you thinking?"
"Some kind of interference, maybe. We aren't exactly a prime target for terrorists. Maybe a sinkhole...a car accident...some combination. Not sure."
They turned onto another street, heading toward the telephone substation for the area, and suddenly, everything changed. The world looked washed out somehow, attenuated. Maybourn slammed down on the brakes and pulled the car over. "What the hell?" He said. He slowly backed up, but the patrolcar suddenly stopped, as if it hit a barrier. He put it into park.
He tried to radio the dispatcher...static.
They both got out and walked to see what was stopping them. It was a shimmering in the air, which stopped any forward motion. But they'd somehow driven through it, which meant not only was it invisible from the 'outside', but it was one-way.
"This isn't possible," Officer Maybourn said.
"Just because no one has ever seen something doesn't mean it isn't possible," his partner told him.
He nodded, grudgingly. "Well, that explains the missing repair crew. I bet this is blocking the radios too."
She paused as the barrier moved a few feet back. "And its growing."
