Meanwhile, across the town, Jon said "I wish that for the next hour, everyone could live and talk without air. I wish that during that time, there would be no air within the range of this stone, no side effects from the lack of air, and nobody would notice it unless I tell them."
It was a risk, of course. Jon didn't know if the stone didn't affect the guy because he was immune to it, or if the stone didn't affect the guy because he was out of the range.
Soon, though, he was rewarded by a phone call from Karyn. "Jon! Something happened. I was so scared.... This guy threatened me to get the stone from you, and then all of a sudden he started gasping and choking."
"What? Right now?"
"Yeah. I was afraid for my life. Or worse...."
"Karyn, I think I saved you. For now, anyway."
"What did you do?"
"Did you notice you weren't breathing just now? I took away the air and made it so we don't need air. If the guy's immune to the stone, he'll still need air and he'll choke to death."
"That's right! I'm not breathing anything. And I can still talk! Funny how I didn't notice it. Do you think he's gone for good?"
"Exactly how did he threaten you, Karyn?"
"He touched me and his finger was icy cold. I couldn't move or scream. He's got some kind of powers. He said he could only use them on me because I was affected by the stone. Now, he's dead. I think. If he doesn't have a way to come back."
"Is there still a body?"
"So far, yes. I've been wondering if some giant eagle is going to swoop in and take it away."
"I'll come over. I can make a big hole to bury him in or something like that. But if he has powers, he might have some way to come back. This may just be the beginning...."
