I think it's one of those things that works in certain media and not in others: on TV small things like that can be visually incorporated, while over text all you have is the text and it stands out. Part of it is also genre. Which, yes, we do go off into weird genres sometimes (says the guy who once tried to start a film noir branch), but because of that, if you're going to go that direction you have to go all-in and make everything over the top so the audience knows that those are the genre rules we're playing with, because the next click they make will take them into someone else's genre rules.
It's all very confusing. This is a weird and lovely medium.
