Roger was in the kitchen. "Oh, hello, Mikey," he said, politely. The greeting was a bit distant. "What can I do for you?"
"Daddy said I should help you with dinner," Mikey told her.
"Well, I have it under control, but...you can keep me company. Are you staying for dinner?"
Mikey looked confused. "Yes," he said.
"Well, I'll set a place for you then. The more the merrier."
Mikey frowned again. Why was she acting like he was not going to be at dinner? He thought about it, and realized he hadn't been lately...maybe she'd just gotten used to that.
"Linda," Roger said as he entered the dining room, from where he could see the two playing on the couch. "Sarah has done all her homework, hasn't she?"
"Yeah...I mean I think so. Right, kiddo?" Linda said to Sarah.
"Yeah, before we started," Sarah said, continuing the game.
