Roger took the envelope from Jon's trembling hand and ripped it open, pulling out the sheet inside to see whose life he was about to inhabit.
He frowned. "Dear Roger Madison, you have been selected for reassignment. As you know, reassignment is a necessary part of our five year community plan. You will be picked up within the coming hours. Thank you for your contribution to our society. Your assignment is...Gabriela Pinzon...16 years old, student at Lake Point High School."
"Who?" Jon asked. He didn't know anyone by that name.
"That's part of the..." Roger said, before he was interrupted by the doorbell. Linda went to open it. Two men in black suits were standing there, looking like stereotypical government types.
"It's time," one of them said, glancing down at the red envelope.
"I need a few minutes more with my family," Roger said.
The agent looked at him. "That is no longer your concern," he said. "Please empty your pockets," he said, calmly, holding out a small bag. Roger put his wallet, keys, and phone into the bag. "Come with me please," he said.
The other agent handed Linda a card. "We would appreciate it if you would box up the remainder of his personal effects. An agent will come and collect them tomorrow."
Jon looked at them. "What's going to happen to him?"
"Don't worry," the agent said. "He won't be harmed at all."
Each of the agents took Roger by the hand, and led him out.
The whole family stared after him, silent.
But who was this person they mentioned? Jon knew most of the kids at school, and the name didn't ring a bell.
