Sarah was waiting for her first class of the day, AP English, to start. She had only picked the class for the AP credits. But now was finding herself appreciating how much her writing had improved so far. She had much higher hopes for how her college admissions essay would go when it was time to start writing it.

Her thoughts were soon stopped as the teacher called the class to attention. Ending the low rumble of voices that for the past several minutes had been filling the room.

“Okay class, before we get into today’s lesson, I will be assigning you three essays that will make up your final project for this class.”

Several load groans filled the classroom. And her teacher waited for the students to settle down before they continued.

“Now that you have settled down, I will tell you what it will entail. Also, don’t worry, the last essay will fit many of the prompts top colleges are using this year so you will be to use your essay in your admissions.”

That last statement raised the mood of the class slightly.

“Now the theme for these three essays is ‘Unexpected Connections’. For every one of us, even me, there are people we wouldn’t dare approach for anything, or at least, never really see. The goal of this project is to foster connections with these people and in the end, write an essay about what Unexpected Connections you have made this year and what they mean to you. You will be assigned two partners and for each one, you will have to write an essay on what you have in common. This will be due by next Friday. The third essay is about how you have fostered new unexpected connections this year and will be due three weeks from tomorrow. Now if you don’t have much luck with the first part, fostering connections with your fellow AP English students, that’s alright, that’s why you can draw from this whole year. But it is highly encouraged to utilize this opportunity to get great material for your final essay. The rubric is on the class websi…”

Sarah zoned the rest out. She was worried. Somehow, she knew that at least one of the two people she would be assigned would be Karyn or Jon. She had always wondered how the two of them ended up in this class. In her experience, they weren’t particularly intelligent, but she never cared enough to ask.

She looked over to where Karyn and Jon normally sat. Jon or Jen as she should start calling her looked to be the same as she did ever since her miraculous change. The only difference was her outfit. She was taking it easy today with a sweater and sweatpants. She then looked to Karyn gasped as her bracelet heated up. It seemed to be particularly active whenever her eyes passed over Karyn’s short red hair or perfectly sized breasts of all things. Something must be different about those things, but Karyn had always looked like that. Well obviously, she looked different before puberty, but she knew that wasn’t what the bracelet was trying to tell her. Still, she always remembered her wearing her hair with the long hair only on one side stopping just above her chin. The other side was cut close. She still couldn’t find any differences.

She looked back to the board where the teacher had pulled up the pairings for the project.

She sighed…. Great…

Her two partners were Jen and Karyn…

It couldn’t be worse honest… But that gave her an idea. She had been looking into the changes which seemed to be centered around Jen and Karyn and this would be the perfect opportunity to get closer to them and try to figure out what was going on. She would have to tolerate them, but she had done worse. Not much worse, this was pretty close, but she HAD done worse. She could do this.
