Once he got back to his room, Jon grabbed the stone. "I wish I knew why my last wish affected Zoe too." He waited for the stone to glow, but it didn't. What he didn't realize was that it couldn't grant the wish to all the Goths (it was the Similarity Target Stone, remember) because the Goths hadn't made any wishes. But even if they had, it still wouldn't have granted the wish, because there were no Goths in town anymore, since they were all now part of the popular crowd, which also hadn't made any wishes.
Since there were no more Goths around within range of the stone, the Similarity Target Stone chose a new group of people to grant wishes to - the popular crowd, which now consisted of the original popular crowd (Sarah McMillan and her friends, Biff Meadows and his friends, etc.) and all of the former Goths.
"What's wrong with this thing?" he asked, looking down at the stone. Why wasn't it working? Had he broken it somehow?
There was a knock at his door. "Jon, shouldn't you be getting to school?" It was his mother.
"Uh, yeah," he said, putting the stone in his pocket and grabbing his schoolbag. He'd just have to wait until later to figure out what was wrong with the stone.
He left the house and made his way to school.
