It seemed like a long while later before he heard the sound of the door opening.
He rolled over onto his back, to see something that surprised him. It was a cat with grey fur and black stripes. He remembered that his mother was cat-sitting the neighbor's kitten, Norman..who usually gave him a wide berth.
How had the cat opened the door?
The kitten leapt onto the bed next to him. The two were roughly the same size...except the cat had claws.
Leonard moved back, a bit frightened of being attacked, as he suddenly remembered the last time he'd been this close to the neighbor's cat.
The buttered cat paradox asks what would happen if one attached a piece of buttered toast to the back of a cat, then dropped the cat. Cats are supposed to always land on their feet, and buttered toast is always supposed to land butter side down.
One incredibly silly Saturday afternoon, after very little sleep and a lot of online RPG gaming, he'd tried to test this theory.
The kitten watched Leonard, his eyes seeming to the boy as if locked on his every move...Leonard began to zone out, falling deeper and deeper into those dark eyes, as if mesmerized.
