Jon comforted the girl and then said "I wish you'd go to your room and fall asleep for a while."
The child had a confused look on her face and Jon explained, "I think it's for the best." She looked even more confused and Jon said "I wish you'd believe me."
"Thanks, Jon," she said and walked away.
Jon thought. Something was seriously wrong. First of all, his dad was dead. When his mother lost her husband it was a great hardship. Second, even if his wish had brought Dad back to life, there was no chance for Dad to get ahold of the stone--Jon had used the stone to wish for something interesting and then immediately ran into his dad.
There were a number of possible explanations, of course. One was that his dad had not really gotten ahold of the stone, but the "interesting" wish changed reality to make it look like he did.
One of the easier possibilities to check, though, was simple. Time travel. Some time in the future he had brought his dad back to life. Some time after that, Dad got ahold of the stone and accidentally turned himself into a girl. When he wished for something interesting, it threw him into that future. This would also explain why the wish to turn him into a girl didn't affect Jon's memory--since he had travelled through time, he was not around at the moment the wish was made, so he wasn't affected.
It couldn't be very far in the future, either, or Dad would have expected him to be grown up or at college.
How to check it? Simple. Look at a clock. His own clock did show the date of the month. He returned to his room and looked at the clock, which did indeed show that it was the future. But then he heard someone at the door. Jon realized that if he was in the future, and if he hadn't just disappeared for a period of time, there must be a version of himself from this time period. The door opened to reveal....
