Jon and Karyn arrived at school. "So..you wished something interesting would happen?" Karyn said.
"Yeah. Stupid, huh?"
"Yeah, but maybe you'll dodge a bullet. Interesting could be you learn something at school about penguins, or something mundane like that."
Jon looked at her. "Do you really think that?"
"No."
"Me neither," Jon said, sighing. He looked across the hall, and spotted Sarah. "Well, that's interesting."
Karyn turned. Sarah looked like she'd been crying about something, and was being comforted by her entourage. "Yeah...I heard a rumor her boyfriend got in the ReAllocation Program."
"The what?"
"You know, there was an assembly, and the city debate..." She paused. "You don't remember any of this. Tell me you didn't wish that up."
"Wish what up?"
"This whole ReAllocation thing."
"Ummm...maybe?" He said, unsure.
She reached into her bag and pulled out some papers. It was a handout from the assembly she'd mentioned. He looked through it. The city was looking to boost diversity, as it would bring in new revenue and tax incentives from state, federal, and private sources.
The plan seemed vague in places as he skimmed it. It mentioned standardized testing, and how resources would be reallocated. Students would be reallocated as well.
He looked at her. "How do you reallocate a student?"
"Well," Karyn said. "Apparently if we have too many of something, they'll divert the resources elsewhere. I didn't quite get that part exctly. I thought it meant some students would be transferred in and out. I guess Biff got transferred last night."
"To where?"
"Well, I think the city set up some sort of experimental teaching program for them. I should have paid more attention."
Jon frowned. Karyn was being awfully casual about this. But, to her, it was normal for the reality he'd accidentally wished on them. He wondered what happened to Biff. He hated him, but that didn't mean he wanted him hurt.
