"I'm Zoe Gibson, Mrs. DeVries. I'm ... I mean I was ... I mean ..." How was she going to explain this? They obviously didn't know who she was. If she told them the truth, they'd probably think that she was nuts.
"Well, it's nice to meet you," Athena's mother said, trying to be polite to this obviously-confused girl who she had never seen before. She reached out her hand and Zoe shook it.
Jon finally arrived, parking the minivan on the street, but it was too late. He watched as Zoe shook hands with Athena's mother ... and then they both swapped ages. Zoe was suddenly in her early forties (she'd never be younger again) and Mrs. DeVries was suddenly a teenager. He briefly wondered how this would all work out. Like Jon, Athena had no father. It was something that she and Zoe had in common, besides both being Goth. If Mrs. DeVries wasn't an adult anymore, then did that mean that Athena no longer existed? Or did reality change in some other way to fit the age swap?
He got out of the minivan and walked up to the house.
