"Yes? Can I help you?" asked the person who opened the door. It was Athena, her friend. But she wasn't acting like her friend. "Oh, you're Zoe, right? From school?" Why was she acting like they were just acquaintances? Zoe looked at her friend. She hadn't changed. She was still the same Goth she was before. So why was their relationship different?
It took her a moment to realize what was happening. Zoe was supposed to be almost 17 years old now, a junior in high school. Athena's age hadn't changed, so she was still a freshman. In this new reality, Athena must not have been her best friend.
"Oh, Athena," Zoe said, her heart sinking. "I wish you could remember."
"Remember? Remember what?" Athena asked. "What are you doing here, anyway?"
"Athena? Who is it?" came another voice. It was Athena's mother Gillian DeVries. And soon, Gillian was standing in the doorway too. "Who is this?" she asked her daughter.
Just at that moment, Jon was speeding down the street, trying to get there before Zoe touched someone. He really hoped that if she did touch someone, she touched her friend. They were only a few years apart, so it wouldn't have been that big of a deal. But stopping her was the best idea.
