In the background a great battle with a mystical cloud was under way. Just outside of view Jon was making the ultimate sacrifice for his silly wish, Athena was casting a spell that while it would doom her to this new early adulthood and force Zoe to have to relive 10 years of her life, would banish this evil, and Karyn was discovering that she was the chosen one of old, and stood to give the final blow.
In the foreground, a girl watched as someone "better" kissed her former boyfriend, and cried helplessly as she watched them drive off together. In that moment, promises were made. The kiss was a promise to herself that she wasn't going to go back, this was hers' and she wasn't giving it up willingly. Kyla didn't know why or how she was now who she was, but she refused to be anyone else in that moment.
Sarah, in her tears, in her fear, in her humiliations, promised herself the opposite, that no matter what it took, she wasn't going to be bullied again, and she was never going to be less than she had been made. She tried to turn her sadness to anger, her fear to courage, but the effort exhausted her.
In the light of a dying cloud, as stone, water, and air magic collapsed in on each other, both girls wished for more, and received what little was left, a final shudder on a closing door.
Sarah McMillian, stood up from the curb, got into her mothers car, and openly told the story of her night to her mother, who reminded her now more of Kyla than of herself, still a well to do, beautiful, and powerful woman. Sarah must have been such a disappointment to her now, but she moved passed the intimidation she felt at her gaze, and spoke honestly about what she wanted. It was the first time she had felt courage all night.
Kyla Leeson, was driven up to a modest house, and gave her boyfriend a long and generous kiss goodnight, she wanted him to remember it, she wanted him tight around her finger and she wanted him to forget everyone else but her. When the kiss was over, she stepped out the car, turned and walked into a larger house, with the same parents with nicer things. A house where two engineer minded folks had gone into more lucrative fields, and were able to give more.
As both girls walked to their rooms and went to bed, they shared a surreal experience of both recognizing a different space, while knowing it wasn't what they were used to. Kyla expected Sarah to be at her door in the morning, to help her lock all this down around her, if she didn't there would be hell to pay. Both girls went to bed with this in mind.
